Kelpling - Art Print

Kelpling - Art Print

PriceFrom £18.00

High quality art print reproduced from my hand-drawn colour pencil illustration 'Kelpling'.

Kelplings are one of the smallest kinds of kelpies - the shapeshifting waterhorses of Scottish and Irish legend. At least, that’s what this little one tells me. I was channeling a marine waterhorse spirit, and this charming seahorse-like creature is who came through. Kelplings are dainty little things, no bigger than your hand, but in true kelpie fashion they have a chilling darker side. Very occasionally, its said they lure in unsuspecting human prey disguised as common kelp with their mesmerising, sweet, wordless song - somehow both melodic and entrancing - before entwining together to bind and drown their victim. Such a large meal can last weeks at a time if the group is small, and in between these rare kills they sustain themselves by grazing languidly on their namesake, kelp. They only ever sing and hunt in groups and prefer the cold waters of the Celtic and Nordic coasts, and they are almost never witnessed in their true form. So next time you’re swimming off the coast in a cold sea, and you see a little piece of kelp… You might just be looking at a kelpling. Best to give it a wide berth… Especially, and always, if you hear singing!
